Young Roots
From the origins of Black Sabbath to over 90% of the UK’s bhangra music production, Birmingham has a varied musical heritage. However, only 11% of people interviewed by the project's youth panel could name a single Birmingham musician. They developed a project to break down people’s perceptions with heritage partner Birmingham Music Archives.
Knowing we’ve had such a positive impact on these young people has been very rewarding.
Following an intensive training programme including courses in project management and public speaking, the youth panel developed the confidence to deliver presentations on their own and help facilitate workshops.
After interviewing musicians and visiting many of Birmingham’s iconic music venues, the young people delivered workshops at eight secondary schools to explore some of Birmingham Music Archives collection and create re-imagined album covers. These were exhibited at the 2016 City of Colours festival which had over 10,000 visitors.
