A programme to improve access to Winckley Square, Preston, and celebrate the significant heritage of the gardens.

Winckley Square is a historically significant, centrally-located area in Preston which has been instrumental in the city's development. The square is often cited as being among the finest examples of a privately-planned Georgian square with open space in the North of England. It includes 25 Grade II listed buildings, primarily three storey Georgian brick-built structures.

This work sought to deliver a new vision for the green space of the square, which celebrates this heritage, and which provides a welcoming, attractive and vibrant space which can be accessed by all sectors of the community.

Improvements to the infrastructure were undertaken, including works to deal with existing problems around drainage and public access. The project established a layout to deliver a much more functional space than was previously the case and highlighted interpretation of the area's significant heritage.

The project also delivered a programme of activities to engage people from all backgrounds to bring the space to life, and stimulate local ownership and stewardship of the green space.
