Heritage Grants
The reserve overlooks part of the Ouse Washes, an area created in the 17th century by the construction of the Old and New Bedford Rivers. It now provides a haven for wildfowl during the winter months when the washes are flooded.
Our grant financed the construction of a new build visitor centre with an integrated bridge, which takes visitors directly from the visitor centre to the hides and observatory overlooking the Ouse Washes. Previously, the visitor centre at Welney Wetland Centre was housed in portacabins in the car park; access to the main observatory and hides was reached by crossing a road and over a short bridge.
The new visitor centre incorporates sustainable technology, including a ground source heat pump and a reed bed filtration system for grey water recycling. The project also includes natural and cultural history interpretation of the Ouse Washes, and has delivered an education programme.
