Previously, access to the site was across a poorly maintained footpath, which only accessed certain parts of the battlefield. Our funding was used to create a countryside attraction on the site, through conserving the landscape and improving public access. New footpaths were created, designed to provide disabled access and allow visitors to experience the full extent of the battlefield area. Visitors can now access these footpaths for free throughout the year.
The Battle of Shrewsbury was fought between Henry IV and the rebellious Percy family, the Dukes of Northumberland. The battle is most popularly remembered today as the main events of the final two acts of Shakespeare’s Henry IV Part I. The battlefield retains many medieval features including the fishponds, moat, and ridge and furrow.
