Scotland's National Parks: The Mountains and The People

This five-year long project will address the deteriorating condition of the unique landscapes of Scotland’s two National Parks: Cairngorms, and Loch Lomond and the Trossachs.

These National Parks are immensely popular and attract millions of visitors each year, but both suffer from erosion caused by footfall and rainfall. The project aims to combine urgent repairs to the worst-affected areas with extensive training and volunteering opportunities.

There are six integrated programmes of work and activities, which will combine to:

• upgrade 124.5km of upland paths
• deliver accredited training programmes to young people from the area
• recruit volunteers from nearby urban centres, including Glasgow and Stirling
• deliver education programmes to schools, colleges, and universities

Also included in the project is a plan to create an information programme. This will help visitors to the park, and other organisations, understand their responsibilities with regard to conserving this unique natural environment. It will also contribute towards the sustainability of the efforts made to protect paths and habitats.
