The project was to restore, expand, develop and re-design the Royal Naval Museum in Portsmouth.
This involved increasing access to its collections by providing better amenities for visitors, including:
- expanding displays
- providing more accessible displays and facilities
- a new study centre
- upgraded storage facilities
The funding enabled the Royal Naval Museum to renovate the ancient monument Storehouse No 11, which dates back to 1763. It also helped to create a central site for the museum’s Research Collections and curatorial staff, with enlarged and enhanced collection storage and new access and study facilities.
The Royal Naval Museum sits within Portsmouth Historic Dockyard, in four buildings: Storehouses 9, 10 and 11, and the Victory Gallery. The Storehouses, built between 1740 and 1790 for naval use, remain generally as they were built and are now Scheduled Ancient Monuments.
