Restoration of the Theatre Royal in Bury St Edmunds

The project worked to restore the building’s heritage while maintaining 21st century comfort and convenience for the theatre’s modern audiences. 

Work included restoring the interior of the building to as near to its 1819 design as possible, in the context of a contemporary theatre. Dramatic improvements were made to the Grade I listed Regency building, with the stage, pit, boxes, gallery seating and foyer all being given an overhaul.

The restored facilities are now able to better cater for disabled visitors, and a full and exciting interpretation programme has been provided to bring the building’s past to life.

The building is now a leading example of a Regency period theatre, and provides performers and audiences alike with a unique theatrical experience.

Judith Shallow, Chairman of the Theatre Royal Board of Management, said: “Our audiences can now look forward to experiencing the thrill and ambience of a genuine Regency playhouse.”
