The project involves the re-imagining of New Theatre Royal, Portsmouth.
The aim is to repair, restore and return the Grade II* listed theatre to a viable state as a regional theatre of UK-wide heritage importance.
A four-year programme of learning and outreach will see the theatre transformed into a centre for good practice in engaging the local community and wider public in the heritage of theatre.
Built by CJ Phipps and reconstructed by Matcham, the New Theatre Royal is a rare survivor and impressive architectural example of the combined efforts of these two renowned Victorian theatre designers. In 1972 the theatre was damaged by a fire, which completely gutted the stage house. The restoration of the building will include reinstating features including statues, the stage, and orchestra pit.
