Monkwearmouth Station Museum is housed in a Grade II-listed building, under ownership of Sunderland City Council.
The museum is a key Sunderland heritage attraction which was established in 1973 and provides displays of transport and local history, including objects from Tyne & Wear Museums (TWM) collections of science and technology and fine and decorative arts.
The museum had not benefited from any significant capital investment since it opened, and by 2004 was in need of major refurbishment. A redevelopment programme was devised to give the museum a new lease of life and to build on its success as a popular learning and community resource.
The programme of works involved:
- renewal of the fabric of the building (including the roof)
- installation of new building services (including heating and lighting)
- renewal of ground floor galleries with new interpretation and interactive displays
- refurbishment of the entrance hall and connecting spaces
- installation of a lift
- opening up of first floor spaces for learning and community use
- introduction of a three-year programme of learning, community and outreach activities
