Funding was awarded to improve the visitor facilities and storage conditions at Fort Nelson, a 19-acre Victorian gun fort, overlooking Portsmouth Harbour.
Fort Nelson, a Scheduled Ancient Monument, was built between 1862 and 1871 and is home to the Royal Armouries collection of historic artillery.
The project involved the creation of a new visitor centre, containing a welcome and information centre, a shop and a café.
It also included restoration of the ‘wall walk’, which was previously inaccessible to visitors. Improvements were also made to visitor information throughout the Fort, explaining the stories of the historic site and collection in a more accessible way.
The improved facilities have enabled visitors to learn about the fort's history and explore the collection of artillery.
