Heritage Grants
Huddersfield Community Trust runs a wide range of community-based activities for sports clubs in Huddersfield.
With the help of the Western Front Association, 20 volunteers explored a number of different stories, from the lives of individuals such as Douglas Clarke, a star team member and soldier, through to the story of conscientious objection in Huddersfield. They also found out about how the Army Services Corp targeted recruitment at rugby players, so that they would have the best rugby team in the Army.
The project collected, recorded and displayed documents, photographs and oral histories relating to Huddersfield’s sporting history and the impact of the First World War upon it. These stories are shared on the project website, in an exhibition, two heritage trails, a book and through a local history study unit for primary schools.
