Team Katalyst Youth Movement based at Kiveton Priory, a mining village in South Yorkshire, is a not-for-profit organisation that works with young people on a range of activities including filmmaking to provide training for the future.
Using film, and visits to the National Coal Mining Museum, Kelham Island Industrial Museum and local ex mining villages, the project bridged the generation gap between adults who worked in coal and steel industries, and the young people of today.
Working with ex-miners on tours of underground mines and the owner of the world’s largest collection of Sheffield Saws, young people gained first-hand knowledge of what it was like to work in those industries from a workforce that is fast disappearing from the area.
The participants worked with Sheffield Archives, The University of Sheffield and Kiveton Park and Wales Historical Society to document and record their findings through film and exhibitions. These films have left an insightful legacy for generations to come.
