Heritage Grants
Finsley Gate Wharf, known locally as Mile Wharf, is one of the oldest wharves on the Leeds & Liverpool Canal.
The site includes three listed warehouses, a listed canal cottage, a former blacksmith’s forge and a boat slipway, dating from between 1700 and 1830.
The Canal & River Trust's project has created new local enterprises:
- a private boat hire and repair business
- a café/restaurant and function suite
- a holiday cottage
- a dry dock to accommodate large narrow boats
The previous forge cottage is being used for education and learning. This underpins Burnley Council’s vision of using the canalside area to boost the town’s economic future.
There have been opportunities for volunteering and learning during the works as well as ongoing apprenticeships and training. The project has also created digital material, learning resources and a programme of activities for schools and the general public, focused on the history of the site, the canal and its importance in the development of Burnley.
