This intergenerational project explored links between work and leisure, focusing on the Rotherham mining industry and football club, during the 1940s and 1950s.

Young people living in the old mining communities of Rotherham were enlisted to collect stories from older residents about the days when men worked shifts down the Rotherham collieries during the week, and played football for Rotherham United on Saturdays.

The project also looked at how both the mining industry and football was affected by the Second World War, how life at home continued during that time, and the strength of Yorkshire men to carry on despite adversity.

Personal memories and mementos from the era were collected and recorded for preservation, for future Rotherham generations.

From Coal To Goal aimed to break down barriers and promote a better understanding between generations, and improve community self-worth by making participants feel valued for their part in contributing to local history.
