Heritage Grants
The Charleston Farmhouse was the country home of Vanessa Bell and Duncan Grant, two early 20th-century artists. The farmhouse was a meeting place for the ‘Bloomsbury group’. The artists decorated the walls, doors and furniture of the Charleston, most of which remains protected in the house to this day.
The Charleston Trust charity was established in 1981 to conserve the house, interpret the artefacts, and make it accessible to as many people as possible. The Charleston Regained project aimed to improve physical access, minimise deterioration and extend intellectual access to the collection by making information available online. The overall objective was to safeguard Charleston’s heritage for future generations.
Building work was undertaken to maintain Charleston’s Grade II listed buildings. This included installation of environmental management systems and upgrades to access points and facilities. Conservation work was undertaken and the collection was catalogued and referenced online on the site’s website.
