While our built and cultural heritage continues to grow, our natural heritage is declining in abundance, diversity and condition at an increasingly fast rate.

The UK is one of the most nature depleted countries in the world, so we need to work hard to save all that is left, much of which is at risk of loss and extinction.

Back from the Brink is a game-changing partnership that is helping to turn the tide for some of our most threatened wildlife through species and habitat conservation at a country-wide scale and by inspiring the next generation to care for England’s most vulnerable wildlife.

To deliver real impact, seven not-for-profit species-focused organisations have joined forces to work in partnership with Natural England for the very first time, sharing resources and thereby increasing skills.

The project aims to ultimately save 20 species from extinction in England by 2020 and benefit over 200 other threatened species through conservation works to specific habitats. It also wants to inspire a conservation movement to get people to take greater care of nature in future. By working at carefully selected sites, conservation work will benefit a multitude of species at each location, combining efforts and creating sustainable ecosystems.

Some specific species will also be the focus of targeted conservation such as pine martens, black-tailed godwits, ladybird spiders and the little whirlpool ramshorn snail.
