Making a splash at the opening of Pontypridd Lido
Today marks the official re-opening of Pontypridd Lido, one of the most iconic open-air lidos in the UK thanks to its prominent position in the Grade II listed Pontypridd parkland at Ynysangharad War Memorial Park.
First built in 1927 with help from the Miners Welfare Fund, the lido could astoundingly accommodate up to 1,000 people in its heyday. During the post-war years the lido remained a popular attraction for the local community, but by the early 1980s the complex sadly fell into decline and was eventually closed in 1991.
Now, thanks to money raised by National Lottery players, the proud Pontypridd Lido opens its doors to swimmers once again with fully modern and renovated facilities throughout.
Not only can local swimmers enjoy the renewed facilities, but permanent displays and education packs are also helping to ensure that its history and people’s memories of the lido retains its status as a much loved community asset.
Richard Bellamy, Head of Heritage Lottery Fund Wales, explains why he sees the lido as such as privilege for Pontypridd residents: “Money raised by National Lottery players has helped re-open this art deco treasure, bringing it back to life since it closed its doors in 1991 for almost a quarter of a century.
“It will be an excellent asset for the local community and is a fantastic venue to have on your doorstep - as well as for visitors from further afield. I hope that as many people as possible take the opportunity to experience the joy of swimming under an open sky this summer!”
The lido will be open to the general public for swimming and bathing from 9am this Tuesday 25 August. Please visit the Lido Ponty website for further information.
