HLF Wales Committee welcomes new member
The Wales Committee is made up of leading figures in the heritage sector across the region who are chosen for their wide range of experience and local knowledge. Responsible for making decisions on applications to the Fund from £100,000 to £2million, the committee are supported by the Wales HLF team based in Cardiff.
Nigel Clubb will join the existing six members of the committee made up of local people through open advertisement. Their expertise widely reflects and compliments the range of heritage applications that HLF receives.
Born and brought up in Wales and currently based in Brecon, Nigel Clubb has worked extensively in local government and the heritage sector. He established the Greater London Historic Environment Record and the English Heritage Record Office and became Director of the National Monuments Record, the UK's largest historic environment and photographic archive. Nigel is a Registered Archivist, a Member of the Institute for Archaeologists, a Fellow of the Society of Antiquaries and a Council Member of the Brecknock Society and the Friends of Brecknock Museum.
Commenting on his appointment, he said: “It is a great privilege to be joining the HLF Committee for Wales at a time when the HLF is transforming how we understand and enjoy our distinctive heritage. As this is also a time of economic and social challenge, we must seek to develop our diverse heritage in order to enhance the lives of all who live in Wales, now and into the future.”

HLF funds an amazing array of projects that encompass all aspects of the UK’s rich and diverse heritage. During the 19-plus years that the HLF has existed, Wales has shared over £287million supporting more than 2,200 projects. These range from restoration of historic buildings, improvements to museums and galleries, makeovers for town parks, purchasing works of art and treasured artefacts, helping to conserve the natural environment, and promoting community involvement in conserving local social histories. HLF is also actively involved in supporting a wide range of projects marking the centenary of the First World War. The projects are both large and small ranging from multi-million pound building refurbishments to local youngsters tracing the history of their local town and filming a DVD or producing a play.

Nigel Clubb biography
Nigel Clubb has worked extensively in local government and in the heritage sector. He began his working life with the Greater London Council, working in the fields of planning, transport and education, before becoming Head of Housing Policy. After switching to the heritage sector, he became a senior archivist at the Berkshire Record Office. He subsequently set up the Greater London Historic Environment Record, before establishing the English Heritage Records Office. For 15 years he was Director of the National Monuments Record, the UK's largest historic environment and photographic archive, initially with the Royal Commission on the Historical Monuments of England and later with English Heritage. He was responsible there for many partnership, volunteer and engagement projects, some of which extended across Wales, England and Scotland. He was committed to ensuring that services were shaped by the needs of audiences, for example, the Heritage Gateway, Britain from Above and Images of England. He was UK representative on the European-Heritage.Net project. He has published widely on the management of information and archives for the management and enjoyment of the historic environment.
Nigel holds a first degree in Literature and an MA in Social and Economic History. He also holds Diplomas in Archives Administration and in the History of Art, as well as a Certificate in Field Archaeology. He is a Fellow of the Society of Antiquaries, a Member of the Institute for Archaeologists and a Registered Archivist. He is a Council Member of the Brecknock Society and Friends of Brecknock Museum.
