As part of the project, the Friends of Raikes Road Burial Ground are trying to piece together the full history of the site – including the people who are buried there. The group is looking for any documents, photographs, memories or anecdotes about any aspect of the site which was in active use for a 30 year period from 1846 to 1876. 

Jean Robinson, Chairman of the Friends Group said: “The story behind each of the people buried in the graveyard is part of the overall story of Skipton itself through a key phase of its economic and social history. Finding out whatever we can is a really important part of our project, so we’d be really grateful if local people could have a rummage through their attics and old photo collections.”

The restoration work is being funded through a £9,000 grant from HLF, together with a contribution from Skipton Town Council and fundraising activities arranged by group members. The work will allow the grounds to be re-opened to the public, provide seating and interpretation boards - and will protect the area for future generations.
