Pupils in Newport and Caerphilly researched the history of Lady Rhondda, celebrating her contribution to the suffragette movement and the Women’s Social and Political Union (WSPU) in Newport.

Winding Snake Productions is an arts, heritage and media education company based at Chapter in Cardiff.

The project explored the life and achievements of Margaret Haig Mackworth (Lady Rhondda), as head of WSPU in Newport. By visiting parliament, researching historical artefacts and speaking to local politicians, young people developed an informed and creative response to the women’s liberation movement and to Lady Rhondda’s part in it.

30 young people took part in accredited training in Welsh history, creative writing and script writing sessions and animation workshops. A project website was created along with an animation highlighting the work of Lady Rhondda and bilingual learning resources.

A premiere was held for the animated film at the University of South Wales to celebrate the achievements of the project.

More information about the project can be found on the Bird in a Cage website.
