First World War: Then and Now
The team involved two Flintshire residents, who created the Flintshire War Memorials website, local residents, a school group and a community heritage group.
They received training to investigate the lives of people listed on the local war memorials. They used digital archives, wartime newspapers, the Flintshire Roll of Honour and visited local memorials. They also visited France and Flanders to photograph military graves of Flintshire men.
The website has allowed people from Flintshire and beyond to discover the stories of their relatives and communities. The images taken abroad have been particularly powerful as many were not able to visit the graves. Relatives have also uploaded their own photographs and documents.
The group gave talks to local schools and community groups. The project Twitter account and Facebook group feature stories from the website and connect relatives of those who died.
Many of the team continued to research and the website continues to be added to by the public.
