The Strong Women project aims to capture the untold stories of women in St Helens and Knowsley and celebrate their contributions through street murals.

Carrie Reichardt, an internationally recognised artist, will work with community groups to understand the important roles and responsibilities taken on by strong, local women.

A series of creative workshops, led by Carrie, will take place across the two boroughs to capture the stories and photographs of inspirational women.

To address the gender imbalance in local history, these stories will be used to create two large-scale public murals that celebrate local women’s heritage.

By working long-term with communities and with an exceptional artist like Carrie we hope to shift perspectives and publicly celebrate women's roles.

Alongside the workshops, there will be a programme of public events, activities and a podcast to explore women and LGBTQ+ people’s impact in the traditionally male-dominated world of street art.

Strong Women will also develop an educational programme with resources for teachers to explore street art with children.

Angharad Williams, Head of Programme at Heart of Glass, said: “Like many places, St Helens and Knowsley lack major public art which celebrates women, and especially working-class women. By working long-term with communities and with an exceptional artist like Carrie we hope to shift perspectives and publicly celebrate women's roles both within the boroughs and their communities.”
