National Lottery Grants for Heritage – £250,000 to £5million
Lowestoft's Town Hall has been unused since 2015, putting its historic features at risk. This project will transform the building into a multi-functional centre for the community and visitors.
The Town Hall is the civic centre of Lowestoft and holds a special place in many hearts.
Councillor Alice Taylor, Mayor of Lowestoft
New facilities in the Town Hall will include a heritage hub, exhibition space and café. The restored Council Chamber will be used in civil ceremonies by the local council and registrars.
Our funding will also enable the team to:
- host pop-up events including free workshops for all ages
- volunteering and training opportunities for under-served audiences
- develop a new garden to improve the biodiversity of the site
- develop more installations and interpretation
Several digital activities have kickstarted the project. A behind-the-scenes digital tour of the Town Hall has been developed in collaboration with local historians. A mixed-media exhibition 'A Study of Lowestoft and the Sea' has launched, inspired by the town's fishing legacy and its deep-rooted connection to the sea. It was co-curated by three students from East Coast College.
Anthony Heath, a student involved said: "It has been really exciting learning about the heritage of maritime and fishing in Lowestoft, and more about the town itself – remembering past stories and understanding the importance of the towns around us."
As well as ensuring the long-term financial sustainability of the building, the Town Hall's regeneration will be a catalyst for economic growth and a source of community pride, inclusivity, and well-being.
Councillor Alice Taylor, Mayor of Lowestoft said: "The Town Hall is the civic centre of Lowestoft and holds a special place in many hearts. It's great to have this road map to a revitalised Town Hall and now it's time to move forward."
