A grant of almost £1.5million from the Townscape Heritage Initiative Programme will be invested in reinstating the grandeur of original High Road facades in the North Tottenham Conservation Area during the coming four years.

Work will include repairing the exteriors of buildings and restoring historic architectural features.

Apprentices will be offered the chance to learn valuable period restoration skills by working on the scheme, while local residents will be invited to workshop sessions to find out more about the project.

The grant follows an initial HLF grant of £50,000 – awarded in 2013 – which allowed more detailed proposals to be drawn up. The project is part of the council’s commitment to celebrating Tottenham’s rich heritage and improving the High Road as an attractive shopping destination.

Cllr Alan Strickland, Cabinet Member for Regeneration, said: “I’m delighted that we’ve won this important HLF grant, which will help us improve the facade of some of Tottenham High Road’s most iconic shops.

“Local residents and traders are rightly proud of Tottenham’s heritage and it’s important that we do what we can to capture and support Tottenham’s unique character as we also press ahead with securing the area’s future.”
