Truro’s City Hall will be restored and transformed into a theatre auditorium and business hub.

At the heart of the community for 350 years, the hall has been many things to many people - from a courtroom and seat of political power to a skating rink and food market. It has weathered fire, economic downturn and civil unrest and has plenty of stories to tell.

Now 1,265 of those stories will be captured, one for every seat in the planned new auditorium, putting the hall’s incredible history at the heart of its bright future.

Permanent exhibitions and digital installations will create a ‘voice-scape’ to reveal for the very first time the history of the hall and the community that has used it for centuries.

Julien Boast, Director of Hall for Cornwall, welcomed the good news for the project, which he said would: “Drive economic and cultural growth in Truro and give access to the very best performing arts, to rival any city in the country.”

The new use for the hall, alongside the much-needed conservation work, will keep the building and its heritage secure for many more generations to enjoy.

The scheme has gained initial support for a £2.6million grant and can now start planning this new exciting chapter for Cornwall.
