Sea Music reaches a crescendo in Poole

Donated to the town of Poole in 1991 by world renowned sculptor Sir Anthony Caro, Sea Music was made using local materials with support from local people.
Sea Music was designed to evoke the sound and appearance of the cascading sea through interlocking rings and curves, with central vertical plates recalling the masts and sails of the ships.
Following 25 years of battling the elements, a National Lottery grant has been vital in restoring the sculpture.
Now, that work is complete and the re-launch of Sea Music was accompanied by the world premiere of a new composition inspired by the sculpture, written by Jim Aitchison and performed by Bournemouth Symphony Orchestra.
Community effort
Led by Borough of Poole, the project is supported by National Lottery players through grants from HLF and Arts Council England.
Here's a look at what it has achieved so far:
- Vital restoration work has been completed and the sculpture has been returned to its original colour, with the stairs depicted in silver, as requested by Sir Anthony Caro before his death in 2013
- Sea Music Stories saw local people share their memories on the iconic sculpture
- Local artist Denise Poote worked in partnership with Poole Housing Partnership to create unique and beautiful murals for housing block foyers
- Poole Museum became home to artist in residence Jonathan Parsons for a month, who was inspired by Sea Music to develop new works which will be created throughout the summer period
- Artist David Ward, who will be showcasing an exhibition entitled ‘100 views of Sea Music’ at Poole Museum this summer, has been working with members of local photography group the Happy Snappers. The group will exhibit their own photographs this autumn as part of an exhibition celebrating the creative response, by the Poole community, to their heritage.
