With a grant of £37,800 from the Heritage Lottery Fund's Our Heritage programme, the project will provide access for groups of children and young people to a restored period station located in a ‘Thankful Village’ - nobody living in Scruton died as a result of combat in the First World War.

Visitors will experience ‘time-travel’ from today and back to the time of the Great War in a vintage train. On arrival at Scruton they will encounter railway staff and travellers in period dress, who through role play will share their lives with visiting parties. During their visit, they will meet with travellers and station staff, learning about the immense social impact to villages like Scruton caused by railways and the war.

David Walker, Project Manager, comments: “This is fantastic news for North Yorkshire. The HLF grant will bring alive the past for young people and bring excitement to their learning. The programme will secure the station for the future and provide volunteering opportunities for local people.”
