We work in partnership with Historic Environment Scotland (HES) to support places of worship of all faiths in Scotland. Places of worship include some of Scotland’s oldest and most cherished buildings, and this funding is helping to ensure they are safeguarded for the future. 

Funding for repairs to places of worship from HLF and Historic Environment Scotland is available through HLF’s existing Our Heritage (up to £100,000), Heritage Grants (up to £5m), and Resilient Heritage (HLF only, up to £250,000) programmes. HLF administers this on behalf of both organisations and all enquiries should be directed to HLF. To be eligible for HES funding, your project will need a conservation-accredited lead professional from a recognised accreditation body.

St Ninian’s Cathedral, Perth

St Ninian’s Cathedral in Perth received HES and HLF grants of £249,000 to carry out urgent roof repairs to their A-listed cathedral. Alongside a programme of works to repair the roof, the cathedral created activities to engage people in the heritage of the building. This included new information leaflets and a ‘treasure trail’ for families as well as engaging with the local primary school.

Kingussie Parish Church, Kingussie

Through a £35,000 National Lottery grant, Kingussie Parish Church restored their historic pipe organ and used the opportunity to delve into its history. As part of the project, the Church worked with local schools to learn how the organ works and created a DVD recording of the restoration process.
