Diverse Roots - young people celebrate their heritage in the North West
In April 2011, a team of young people from across the North West came together to take over Band on the Wall in Manchester, creating a pop-up installation celebrating their heritage and identity.
Diverse Roots combined interactive displays with exhibitions and performances exploring what it is to be young and growing up in the 21st-century North West.
From groups re-enacting characters taken from the city’s history, alongside role playing computer programmes and urban dance performances exploring their British African culture, Diverse Roots aims to open up conversation of what heritage actually means to young people.
Some of the young people themselves curated and hosted the event, whilst others were involved in filming and recording the performances and speeches. Watch some of the highlights from the day below.
The creative team is made up of young people from the region, all of whom are passionate about exploring their history and identity. The projects that will be on display have been funded through the HLF Young Roots programme in the North West, which actively supports young people leading projects that explore their heritage.
