Funded by the National Lottery, throughout 2016 over 500 events were attended by hundreds of thousands of people. Events included major exhibitions, talks, workshops and performances as well as research, publications and the creation of new landscapes and activities.

Ros Kerslake, Chief Executive of HLF, said: “Using National Lottery funding, the Capability Brown Festival has been brilliant at exploring every aspect of Capability Brown’s work and using it to appeal to different audiences.”

Complex social world

Maps, drawings and access to Brown’s own accounts book have provided a glimpse into the complex social world Brown operated in, all the way down to the surveyors and labourers who brought his plans to life.

Increased profile

Thanks to the success of the Festival, the increased profile and interest in Brown has led to the creation of a rich seam of new information on over 100 sites such as London’s Buckingham Palace, Derbyshire’s Chatsworth, Brown’s Northumberland birthplace, Kirkharle, and Worcestershire’s Croome.

Site maps available

A number of visitors' maps for around 30 sites will be available from the end of March. There will also be a new leaflet about biodiversity in Brownian landscapes, as well as an accompanying glossary of habitat types.
