Entrenched

Run by Ashcroft Arts Centre, a small-scale local venue in Fareham, Hampshire, the project brought together 50 young people from local schools to engage with the First World War Centenary.

The project focused on the impact of the war in Hampshire, exploring the experiences of local people. Students conducted research at the Hampshire Record Office which enabled them to create a series of films. Students also developed ideas about curation by working with museum staff at Gosport Gallery to create an interactive exhibition which focuses on the journey through a recruitment office into a life-sized replica trench and a medical tent.

Led by the young people themselves, the project successfully combined an in-depth heritage focus with activities that helped develop confidence and skills in communication and teamwork. It also went beyond this to give those involved an insight into how museums are run and the work involved in interpreting and explaining heritage.
