An extensive restoration of the lakes and rock gardens ensured that their nationally recognised collection of hardy water lilies is protected, and improved spaces have facilitated more inclusive learning for visitors.

Developing underused historic structures on site has enabled them to improve learning spaces and develop a more inclusive learning and visitor offer.

Inclusion and wellbeing have been strong threads through the project. Consultation with Hull and East Riding Institute for the Blind has ensured landscaping and routes are accessible, supporting future interpretation plans. New approaches to work with a wider range of groups include:

  • the Wolds Wanderers, an accessible musical theatre group who created two plays based on the history of the gardens
  • Beverley Mental Health art work groups, who have created artwork inspired by the gardens which has been displayed on site and Pocklington Arts Centre and the Treasure House Beverley

The learning spaces have allowed a drastically improved learning and participation for schools, adult learning and special needs groups. The Learning and Participation Officer developed bespoke activities in conjunction with groups alongside their traditional programmes.

All staff and volunteers have received mental health awareness training to support visiting groups and links have been developed with the East Rising Alzheimer’s Awareness Group.
