Wrexham’s museum is bringing football heritage back to its historic home in Wales thanks to a £2.7million award.

The Museum of Two Halves will include a fully refurbished and enhanced Wrexham Museum in the current building, alongside a brand-new National Football Museum for Wales.

Wrexham Association Football Club is the oldest club in Wales and the third-oldest professional association football team in the world. The project is combining the town’s unique sporting heritage and football’s popularity to engage new audiences in the history of the sport in Wales.

The museum also will serve as a community hub, learning centre and visitor attraction, providing more opportunities for people to get involved with the area’s heritage.

A unique collection

The new museum will house a permanent exhibition of the Welsh Football Collection. Iconic objects on display will include:

  • match programmes dating back to 1901
  • John Charles’ debut shirt for Wales v Ireland from March 1950
  • a cap awarded to pioneer of Welsh football, Billy Meredith

Councillor Paul Roberts, Wrexham County Borough Council Lead Member for Partnerships and Community Safety, said: “The money raised by National Lottery players is going to help us transform one of our city’s landmark buildings into a world class venue.

“The rich history of our county borough will be celebrated alongside the eventful story of Welsh football.”
