HLF's Chair has a butchers at London's heritage
HLF’s new Chair Sir Peter Luff is setting out to meet some of the people who are exploring these stories thanks to money raised by National Lottery players.
The first stop will be the borough of Waltham Forest. With fewer applications for funding this has been one of HLF’s priority areas. Now some amazing projects are ensuring the borough’s heritage gets its turn in the spotlight – from Walthamstow Wetlands to the transformation of historic St James Street.
It’s an exciting time for HLF. As well as welcoming Sir Peter to the team, we’re also celebrating our 21st birthday this year and of course continuing to fund a wide range of heritage projects across the UK. To date, thanks for money raised by National Lottery players, we’ve invested over £1.2billion that has helped preserve and share heritage across London.
Sir Peter Luff’s whirlwind tour of London’s heritage will see him:
- Take a walk down St James Street which has just secured a major grant to preserve its historic character and boost local pride in the historic street
- Have a traditional feast of eels, pie and mash at the L Manze Pie & Mash Shop, a much-loved – and unique – feature of Walthamstow since 1929
- Meet the volunteers and young people working on projects to secure an even brighter future for the William Morris Gallery and Lloyd Park
- Gain an insight into the wonderful natural and industrial heritage of Walthamstow Wetlands where work has begun to transform it into the largest urban wetland nature reserve in London
- Hail a black cab to Peckham’s cabbie shelter, one of the city’s 13 huts which have provided cab drivers with a place to eat and rest for over 130 years. Often overlooked, their story is now the focus of a lovely heritage project.
