A scheme to restore and enhance woodlands in Wales as part of the Welsh Government National Forest Initiative.

Adfer Coetir Hynafol Ysbyty (ACHY) / Ysbyty Ancient Woodland Restoration

Applicant: The National Trust for Places of Historic Interest or Natural Beauty

Project description: This project will open previously inaccessible woodlands for community use. This will create new walking trails, recreational spaces and educational opportunities, fostering a connection with nature and encouraging future generations of conservationists.

Decision: Award Grant of £182,965.00 (100%)

Troed yr Harn Permissive Agroforestry Path

Applicant: BLACK MOUNTAINS COLLEGE PROJECT

Project description: This project will create a permissive path at Troed yr Harn farm that adjoins Pwll y Wrach Nature Reserve, a site of special scientific interest due to its woodlands situated within Bannau Brycheiniog National Park.

Cogan - A Wood for all Seasons

Applicant: Vale Of Glamorgan Council

Project description: This project is to help maintain, enhance and protect Cogan Wood whilst also providing a woodland that people can discover and enjoy now and for future generations to come.

Porthkerry - A Walk through the Woods

Applicant: Vale of Glamorgan Council

Project description: This project will improve accessibility and public engagement with the park. This will include providing new interpretation materials, volunteer opportunities and improved access for all.

Colby Ancient Woodland Enhancement

Applicant: The National Trust for Places of Historic Interest or Natural Beauty

Project description: This project will restore the woodlands, creating a space for visitors to reconnect with nature. Improved footpaths will enable easier access, while the community orchard and new plantings will provide opportunities for recreation and learning.

Decision: Award Grant of £248,742.00 (100%)

Restoration and Reinvigoration of Maritime Woodland at Treborth Botanic Garden

Applicant: Bangor University (Treborth Botanical Gardens)

Project description: This project focuses on increasing accessibility and community engagement with the woodlands. It will achieve this by removing access barriers, creating opportunities for learning and recreation and fostering a sense of ownership among the community through volunteer programmes.

Decision: Award Grant of £248,308.00 (100%)

Colwinston Old Ford and Coed Tregolwyn

Applicant: Colwinston Community Council

Project description: This project’s aim is to maintain and develop the local woodland area for community use and activities, as well as creating a safe area for local residents.

Applicant: Nantyrhafod Limited

Project description: This project will create a landscape scale forest for everyone to enjoy. It will improve wellbeing and connect to a resilient ecosystem that supports nature's recovery.

Erlas Woodland

Applicant: Erlas Victorian Walled Garden

Project description: The Erlas Victorian Walled Garden has expanded its size and become part of the National Forest for Wales. The project will create a fully accessible woodland with new planting, a creative hut and a connection to the existing National Forest, offering a valuable resource for the local community.

Restoration of Mill Common Community Woodland

Applicant: Monmouthshire County Council

Project description: This project will restore the woodlands and create an educational space for the community. This will involve improving access, fostering community involvement and enhancing biodiversity through habitat restoration and green skills training.

Decision: Award Grant of £250,000.00 (96.71%)

North Cardiff Woodlands Project

Applicant: Cardiff Council

Project description: This project aims to balance the needs of nature and humans in the woodlands. It will build healthy, resilient, multi-use woodlands, while maintaining and enhancing the access the public currently enjoys. It will make a significant contribution to the economy of the Cardiff region and to the Wales National Forest.

Access Penllergare

Applicant: Ymddiriedolaeth Penllergare - The Penllergare Trust

Project description: This project aims to transform the Valley into a National Forest Hub by improving access to the historic woodlands and the Equatorial Observatory.  New trails, recreational areas and educational programmes will be developed, while engaging the community in restoration and future management.

Decision: Award Grant of £249,150.00 (100%)

Park Wood Talgarth

Applicant: The Woodland Trust

Project description: This project will restore the woodland's biodiversity and create a welcoming space for the community. This will be achieved through collaboration with volunteers, focusing on habitat improvement, public access and showcasing best practices in community woodland management.

Decision: Award Grant of £196,406.00 (97.52%)

Coed y Graig Newtown

Applicant: The Woodland Trust

Project description: This project will restore the neglected Rock Wood and connect it with Coed y Graig woodland, creating a biodiverse haven for Newtown residents. Improved access and community engagement opportunities will allow residents to enjoy nature and participate in its preservation.

Decision: Award Grant of £83,401.00 (89.81%)

Bynea Community Woodland

Applicant: Carmarthenshire County Council

Project description: This project will create a new woodland for the community, offering a space for recreation and environmental benefits. Through planting, path creation and community involvement, the project will improve access, biodiversity and wellbeing.

Pentremawr Community Woodland Project

Applicant: Carmarthenshire County Council

Project description: This project will improve the woodlands for both people and nature. This will be achieved through habitat restoration, improved public access with features for all abilities and community engagement opportunities like volunteer groups. The project also aims to preserve the woodlands' historical and cultural heritage.

Decision: Award Grant of £159,033.00 (100%)

Coed Gors y Gedol Access Improvement Programme. Improving the accessibility of a Celtic Rainforest site in North Wales which is a SSSI and SAC with heritage interest; development of community use while enhancing the biodiversity in the woods

Cynheidre Heritage Woodland Project

Applicant: Llanelli and Mynydd Mawr Heritage Railway

Project description: This project focuses on enhancing the woodland's biodiversity and aligning with UK Forestry Standards. It will achieve this by upskilling volunteers in woodland management, creating a vital link in a regional cycling route and promoting community engagement through bilingual events.

RmCw Enhancement for the Community and Sustainability

Project description: This project will increase community involvement and promote sustainable woodland management. This will be achieved by improving access, providing infrastructure for events and learning and upskilling volunteers in coppicing techniques.

Project description: This project will enhance the woodland's biodiversity and climate resilience. Coed y Felin Woodland Management

Project description: This project will set up a long-term management cycle of coppicing and timber extraction, to increase the structural diversity of the woodland for wildlife, while unlocking the commercial value of timber to sustain its ongoing management beyond the project lifespan.

Changing Forests in a Changing World

Applicant: The Trustees of Ilchester Estates (2) Trust and The Hon Mrs C A Townshend (The Stinsford Partnership)

Project description: This project will focus on Bryn Arau Duon, a large National Forest for Wales woodland, to educate residents of Cilycwm, Caio, and Pumsaint about sustainable forest management practices. The project will also serve as a learning ground for other National Forest members, sharing knowledge on continuous cover forestry, wood science and red squirrel conservation.

Project description: This project will create a new, well-managed woodland for the National Forest network. This project focuses on restoring native rainforest, improving access and education opportunities and fostering community involvement in tackling climate change and biodiversity loss.
