A vibrant art education project aiming to transform understanding of the Transatlantic Trade in Enslaved Africans and its significant global impact.

The Journey of Discovery project has received funding from The National Lottery Heritage Fund and is led by The World Reimagined, a charity committed to making sure racial justice is better understood and that all sides of history are seen.

A cultural collaboration

Artists, activists, educators, and historians came together to create an interactive, digital storytelling platform. It provides a collection of over 300 images and short vignettes – stories that capture moments in time – from archive material.

The stories are broken down into nine themes, from understanding Mother Africa to celebrating Black music, fashion and art and their important contribution to British identity. This enables people to connect with the heritage of their place, community and history and develop a greater understanding of a heritage collection

Alongside the Journey of Discovery, a trail of 103 large artist-designed globe sculptures have been set up across seven cities in the UK, Birmingham, Bristol, Leeds, Leicester, Liverpool, London, and Swansea. They explore the history, legacy and future of the Transatlantic Slave Trade.

The World Reimagined was shortlisted for 'Project of the Year' at the 2022 National Lottery Awards.
