Forming the boundary between Scotland and England, the River Tweed provides a common thread to the natural, built and cultural heritage of the Borders as it meanders across 97 miles of scenic countryside.

The Tweed Rivers Heritage project was one of the most ambitious and comprehensive of its type involving 50 different projects and over 60 separate organisations in conserving and raising awareness of the area's heritage, in all its diversity, on a landscape scale.

Its achievements speak for themselves:

  • 280 ponds created
  • 1000km of footpath upgraded
  • 170km of cycleways created
  • 9 bridges built
  • 8 community woodlands established
  • 15 archaeological sites excavated
  • 20 historic buildings restored including a waterwheel, viaduct and old colliery chimney
  • 57 schools involved
  • 370 talks and presentations given
  • 90 interpretation boards installed
  • 20 key heritage sites and viewpoints enhanced
  • 520,000 leaflets distributed

The impact on the region has been profound. The legacy left by our investment is estimated to support 90 full time jobs. Quality of life has improved and through increased understanding and awareness, communities have been empowered to take stewardship of the heritage on their doorstep.
