National Lottery Grants for Heritage – £250,000 to £5million
Thanks to the latest funding, the Meat Market's historic B-listed Victorian sheds will be restored and developed into a multi-use covered site including:
- sports facilities
- a learning centre
- an enterprise zone with co-working spaces
- a bar and bistro with event space
- interpretation and heritage displays throughout the site
As well as the physical regeneration of the site, our support is also backing a wide-ranging heritage activity programme, ensuring community involvement and putting the rich history of the site at the heart of its future.
Social enterprise company Meat Market Regeneration CIC is behind the redevelopment of the site close to the city centre.
Patrick Flynn, Chairman of Meat Market Regeneration CIC, said: “The Meat Market remains an important site in Glasgow's collective memory. Many of us have past family connections to the variety of businesses that were active there.”
Caroline Clark, The National Lottery Heritage Fund Director for Scotland, said: “This is a community-led project with a focus on delivering significant local benefits while also creating new opportunities on a key site. The wider community has been involved in developing a plan that will protect and return to use the most important built heritage on the site and the more intangible heritage of the people whose work, life and community were so closely connected with the Meat Market.”
