Residents from Stanhill, Oswaldtwistle have been celebrating the rich heritage of their village.

Stanhill Village Residents and Fete Committee is delivering a project to explore the village’s diverse heritage.

Stanhill was home to James Hargreaves, inventor of the Spinning Jenny in 1764, as well as the industrial entrepreneur Robert Peel and author William Bury Westall. It also saw coal mining, quarrying, textiles and calico printing in the Industrial Revolution and was home to a Prisoner of War camp during the Second World War.

Volunteers have been trained in research and oral history skills to uncover more of village’s history. A walking trail with interpretation panels has been installed, with associated leaflet and website; schools activities have also been delivered, alongside a series of walks and talks. A project highlight is the construction of a working model of a Spinning Jenny, which has been used in demonstrations.

Richard Hooper, Project Co-ordinator said "Stanhill Village is arguably the original site of the early industrial textile revolution. Thanks to HLF support we have been able not only to unlock our heritage but also the interest and energy of our community as well."
