This project was awarded a grant to restore and repair St Patrick’s Roman Catholic Cathedral.

The Grade A building is over 150 years old and forms a major element of the Armagh Conservation Area.

The cathedral was designed by architects Thomas Duff and JJ McCarthy and built between 1840 and 1904. It is considered one of the finest examples of McCarthy’s work for its internal decoration, stained glass and carillon. The cathedral now serves 3,600 families in the Armagh parish.

The grant enabled vital work to be carried out to save the historical building. The work focused on preventing any further deterioration from water damage. This included roof repairs, stonework restoration and cleaning, and repairs to the decorative mosaics.

The installation of new ramps, hand rails, and tactile paving also benefited the future of the building by encouraging new visitors to the cathedral.
