This project saw the restoration of the windows, nave and transept of St Andrew’s Church in Sunderland and opening it to a wider audience.

The Grade I listed church was built by Edward Prior in 1907 and it was known as the 'Cathedral of the Arts and Crafts Movement'. It houses furniture by Ernest Gimson, a ceiling mural by MacDonald Gill, a tapestry by Burne-Jones, William Morris carpet, stained glass by A H Payne and lettering and signs by Eric Gill.

Local people learned about the repairs through a lecture, a tour of the church, a photographic exhibition, concerts and a Nave Window open day. Schoolchildren created paintings about the church as part of an art competition.

The project has resolved the structural problems of the church, bringing new light to the building. The church now will be able to develop not only as a place of worship but as a venue for concerts and exhibitions, reaching a wider audience.
