Sharing Heritage
The Romsey Signal Box is one of the few remaining original London Southwest Region signal boxes, operating from 1870 to 1982. Although no longer connected to an active railway line, this significant piece of industrial heritage is in full working condition and offers a hands-on experience to visitors.
It is great to see the project going from strength to strength, and with such impressive and wide-ranging local support.

The grant enabled the friends’ group to construct a new building on site which provided better visitor facilities, improved access, and increased display and exhibition space. The signal box itself was returned to a more authentic working display, enhancing the visitor experience, and a separate demonstration model was installed in the building.
Volunteer numbers trebled and cash donations also increased, making increased opening hours possible. This also led to the inclusion of the signal box in all local tour guides and publicity, courtesy of the local authorities and tourism board.
