A project devised by a group of 25 young people after the old Horse Chestnut tree in the grounds of their community centre was felled.

The tree played a significant part in the lives of generations of the local community. Using the growth rings of the tree as a stimulus, the group recorded the oral histories of members of the community to create a lasting legacy of the village’s unique social and cultural heritage.

The young people learned a host of new skills while taking part in the project, including how to carry out research in historical source materials, event management, interview techniques and financial management.

The oral histories were stored in a new archive and a DVD and website were produced to create a permanent record of the heritage. The young people also designed a new community logo which was carved into the tree’s stump and was unveiled during a community celebration street party event.
