Our Heritage
The church dates from the later part of the 11th century, with additions and alterations in the 12th and 13th centuries. Restoration of the church was carried out between 1864 and 1876 by William Butterfield who was responsible for the painted plaster ceilings of the nave.
These rare painted ceilings have deteriorated over the years suffering from accumulations of dirt, water staining, paint crazing and flaking, and fine fractures to the plaster panels. The project involved the careful conservation and repair of the important ceiling panels to ensure that they are in a stable condition.
The work provided many opportunities for people to engage with the heritage of the church. Schools and community groups took part in art workshops and five volunteers were trained to give guided tours at the project’s open day.
A page on the church website with information on the restoration of the ceilings and a short documentary was produced to ensure that this interesting heritage could be shared with as many people as possible.
