This project aimed to make both the Mappa Mundi and Chained Library accessible to a wide range of people and involve audiences in an interactive way.

The Mappa Mundi and Chained Library can both be found at Hereford Cathedral. The Mappa Mundi dates from c1300 and is the largest known surviving complete medieval map of the world.

In the new exhibition, visitors can use dummy-chained books to experience handling the books and manuscripts as well as interacting with interpretive panels. Exhibition information is now provided in other languages.

The exhibition was also designed to enable visitors to consider the production method of Medieval and Early Modern periods and how they differ from today’s. The project also encouraged users to debate modern day issues by drawing on their heritage past.

The project also developed programmes with local schools and training opportunities for volunteer guides and stewards.

Canon Chris Pullin, Chancellor of the Cathedral, said: “Scholarship has also advanced, and the exhibition has not been able to reflect the new stories that we know about the map and its origins. This marvellous grant will help us achieve this and to make the interpretation of the map available to so many more people.”
