This project contributed to safeguarding the future of Dolgellau, a unique town in the heart of Snowdonia National Park.

The town of Dolgellau has been described as an ‘architectural gem’, nestled at the foot of Cader Idris in the south of Snowdonia National Park.

The town has unique heritage, but has been suffering from long-term decline. This work, which is being co-ordinated by the Snowdonia National Park Authority, focuses regeneration efforts on the historic and commercial centre of the town.

The aim is to conserve a number of historic buildings and their settings, and encourage local people and visitors to engage more with the town’s built heritage.

Specific actions involved in the project include:

  • implementing structural repairs
  • bringing vacant upper floor spaces back into use
  • re-instating key architectural features such as shop fronts, balconies and windows

This work will build on the progress made by a previous Townscape Heritage Initiative project. It will include a rich range of community and volunteer-based activities such as oral history, schools projects and the development of digital history and buildings trails.
