The Old Toll House in Stratford has been restored, and bought back into use as a heritage attraction and viable commercial enterprise.

The building is Grade I listed, and is sited on the historic Clopton Bridge in Stratford-upon-Avon. Stratford Historic Buildings Trust led work to preserve the historic fabric of the building, which before the project began had been placed on Historic England’s ‘At Risk’ register.

The project has converted the building into office space on the ground and first floors, and has made space for interpretation with a demountable exhibition on the lower ground floor. Letting the building as office space will provide the trust with a source of income and ensure the building’s future care and maintenance.

The capital work that the trust carried out on the building included:

  • A new roof
  • Repair and replacement of stonework
  • Installation of a new mezzanine floor

Activities planned during the project also involved tours, outreach talks and the development of a riverside heritage trail.

As a result of this work, the Toll House will attract new businesses, and generate income to support further heritage projects in the area.
