A previous HLF grant, awarded to British Waterways, resulted in the creation of a Conservation Management Strategy for Montgomery Canal.

This first stage of restoration focused on priority works set out in the Conservation Management Strategy.

The section of canal from Growen to Llanymynech is currently dry and was identified for Phase 1 of the restoration. The scheme restored up to 1km of this dry section, with volunteers helping to clear the overgrown site.

Phase 1 also included improvement access to the Gronwen-Redwith section of the canal, which was previously very limited. This involved the resurfacing of the towpath, improving access points (kissing gates and ramped access), and installing handrails and fencing.

This first phase of restoration has now opened more of the canal to the many people who use it for walking, cycling and fishing each year.
