The Thurrock Mobile Explorer phone application allows people to learn about Coalhouse Fort Park and the area around the former Bata shoe factory in east Tilbury.

The project started with a programme of community events and activities that helped local people of all ages learn about the two heritage sites. This went on to enthuse community groups, school children and volunteers to research the local industrial and natural heritage, and the information they collected informed the three new walking trails that are now available through the Mobile Explorer.

The application and associated Mobile Explorer website bring to life the heritage of the area with local people’s reminiscences and the sounds of the wildlife that inhabits the grassland and salt marsh around Coalhouse Fort.

A bank of 10 GPS handsets is available at the Coalhouse Fort Visitor Centre, allowing visitors without smart phones to access Mobile Explorer on site. For those with compatible phones, there is the option to share their images and experiences of the two sites, constantly enriching the application.
