This project focused on increasing access to First World War archival material held in The British Postal Museum and Archive.

This part of the collection explores the history of how the Post Office supported the UK's war effort at home and abroad. It offers insight into the work of the Post Office and how people lived at the time.

Interns and volunteers helped to research and create material for new learning resources and outreach work. Education Officers from the archive delivered sessions to schools and local community groups in Islington and Westminster. The project provided an opportunity to scan and digitise the collection relating to the First World War, ensuring conservation and access in the long term. The project was delivered in partnership with the Westminster Archives.

The project had four aims:

  • To produce two new education packs on the subject of the role of the Post Office during First World War using information from The British Postal Museum and Archive collection.
  • To conserve and enhance the collection.
  • To widen access to the collection.
  • To encourage communities to celebrate heritage.
